Dr. Wheeler is originally from New England and gradually worked his way west during his college years. He obtained his medical degree in 1988 from the University of California at San Diego and completed his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. He received his ophthalmology training in Dallas at the University of Texas Southwestern and went on to a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and treatment of adult eye misalignment at the University of Iowa. He then relocated to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he worked for four years at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital. While there, he conducted the world’s largest study of intraocular lens implants in children following cataract surgery, and travelled extensively.

In 1997, he moved to Portland and joined the Casey Eye Institute at OHSU where he worked until 2010. In addition to a very busy clinical practice involving a great deal of teaching and lecturing, he was involved in numerous research projects involving retinal disease in premature infants and treatment of amblyopia and strabismus (“lazy eye”). He has published many articles in scientific journals regarding the diagnosis and management of eye disorders. He has been selected as one of the Best Doctors in America as well as a Top Doctor in Portland for several years. He is a member of both local and national medical societies.

Dr. Wheeler joined Child Eye Care Associates in 2010 and has a very active full-time practice in Tigard and 4 other satellite offices. His practice interests include management of children with complex, vision threatening diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, pediatric and adult eye misalignment and double vision, and retinopathy of prematurity. When he is not in the office or operating room, he enjoys travelling, wood working, making jewelry, completing jigsaw puzzles and spending time at the beach with his family.
